Night Sounds On The Lake

NIGHT SOUNDS ON THE LAKE

What is it like out on the lake on a clear and moonlit night? As the moon reflects off the smooth surface of the water you can see as bugs begin to move on its surface. When there are bugs moving on the water, there are fish and frogs to see and take notice. The frogs sit on the moss or other vegetation and wait for the bugs to come close enough for them to catch. The fish swimming just under the surface come to the surface and suck the bugs into their mouth and swallow them. There are other bigger fish that watch the surface to try to catch smaller fish, frogs, or mice which might swim over their hiding places.

So as you go slowly along in your boat you can see and hear the sounds of the lake at night. You can see and hear the smaller fish as they make popping noises at the top of the water while they catch bugs. The croaking of the bullfrogs along the edge of the water announces their presence. There are also smaller frogs that make a much higher pitched sound than the bullfrog makes. These sounds can be heard all around the lake in the quiet of the night. The sound of the boat slowly being rowed through the water blends in with other sounds. In some areas you can also hear the call of the loons as they echo across the water of the lake. There is an occasional splash on the surface as one of the larger fish comes up and catches a frog, mouse, or smaller fish. Sometimes, as the boat is moved along, a fishing line is let out behind with a floating lure attached. As the lure is towed, it makes a ripple on the water as it moves along the surface. This ripple on the water and the movement of the lure attracts larger fish that are watching for food. As the lure is pulled along the surface they come up and grab it thinking it will be good to eat. When this happens there is a splash in back of the boat and the fish has a surprise in store. What the fish thought was food bites back and if the person handling the pole is quick enough the fish will be hooked and reeled into the boat. If the fish is not hooked it will go back to where it started and wonder, what has just happened, for what the fish thought was an easy meal didn't turn out that way. What was thought to be food was hard and had stickers that picked its mouth. Next time the fish might have second thoughts when it sees the lure again or one like it. After a hooked fish is landed and either kept for food or turned loose, the lake soon settles down and the sounds of the night return. Except for the sounds from the boat, these sounds will be there each night.

Where Do I Go When I Want To Fish?
By Grandpa Fish Catcher
Thursday, Jul 30, 2009 08:25

When I go fishing I usually know,
What fish I want and where to go.
I gather equipment to fish for those fish,
That will help me put some fish in my dish.

Then I go to the lake or river and flail
Trying to catch some fish for my pail.
I cast my bait where fish ought to be,
But the fish don't always cooperate with me.

I don't catch fish in the spot I have chosen,
Could it be that their jaws here are frozen?
I switch my bait from one color to another,
But they think the same of that color as the other.

I then have to go and find another spot,
Hoping the fishing there will be hot.
If the fishing there is also no good,
Maybe to have stayed home was what I should.

When I get home with my tale of woe,
Will hearts and flowers loud and long flow?
Maybe next time I'll catch some fish
To put in my pail and then in my dish.

I could catch fish, it could happen you know,
It just depends on where the bait you do throw.
If the fish are ready and they are willing,
That's what makes a day of fishing so thrilling.

While Fishing, Where Should My Line Be?
By Grandpa Fish Catcher
Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 10:12
Fishing, whether for small fish or large, requires different types of techniques. Fishing techniques have been developed by trial and error as people throughout the ages have sought to catch fish for food and sport. The type of fish being targeted, for whatever purpose, has presented a challenge to those who sought ways to catch them. Fish have been taken with spears, bow and arrow, nets, by hand, and with hook and line. People throughout time have worked and thought through each of these ways of catching fish and had visions of catching more and bigger fish depending on what they were fishing for and if they were sport fishing or food fishing. There are also those who fish commercially as a way to make a living. These people have also developed their techniques either with long lines or large nets.

Where my line should be when fishing will depend on the type of fish I am seeking to catch. The area where I am fishing, whether on a large lake, small lake, pond, river, or stream will be a determining factor in where my line should be in order to be where the fish are. In early days of fishing, the depth to fish your line so that the bait would be accessible to the fish was determined by slowly moving your line up or down. The depth of the water was always there to be considered and in earlier days that was mainly a guessing game. Today, as technology has been developed, there are depth finders that are electronically controlled so that the water depth can be known and scanned as a boat moves around on a lake or river. There are also electronic fish locators that tell you at what levels the fish are and how big the fish are that you have located. This allows the ability to fish at the same level the fish are suspended in the water.

With all the technology that has been developed over the years there is still no guarantee that fish will be caught. There are people who tell stories of always getting their limit whenever they go fishing. We just have to remember everyone at one time or another has memory loss and people who fish are not exempt from experiencing these times.

Always remember that fish aren't always in the same place or at the same depth so be flexible and patient and most times you will be successful. Always check your fishing tackle and make sure you have the right equipment for the type of fish you are going to try to catch and good luck.

Things You Can't Know Before You Go Fishing
By Grandpa Fish Catcher
Thursday, Jul 16, 2009 09:59
There are some things that you can't know or see before you go fishing. Some of the things you do, you can call ahead for reservations and have things ready for you when you get there. Not so when you are going fishing. You can have all your fishing equipment ready, but you can't have the fish ready. To start with most fish don't carry cell phones or even have a phone at the place where they live so you can't call and ask if they are where you are going to fish. Nor can you ask if they are hungry or even ask what they would prefer to eat that day.

There is one kind of fish that can use a phone, and that is the sucker who has bought all the latest 'never fail' lures that guarantee to catch fish every time. That guarantee is held up when the person who sees and purchases the lure bites on the advertising campaign and buys the lure. Thus the lure has caught a sucker, even though the sucker is a land-locked sucker that can't live in the water. The lure may never catch a real water-living fish but it has done what the advertisement said it would, it has caught at least one sucker.

When you go fishing there are no signs saying where the fish are. Fish don't advertise and brag like people do as to where they are or where they are going. Fish just go from place to place seeking food or cover depending on the situation they are in. When they are hungry, they search for some kind of food to eat and they are usually willing to eat the food they find. They are not like people who have many choices when it comes to food. Fish feed on worms, minnows, bugs, and crayfish. Sometimes they seem to have a preference of one over another so most people who fish try to carry more than one kind of bait or lure, always hoping that one of them will catch fish. There is no way of anyone having pre-knowledge of whether the fish are going to bite the day they go fishing. If that were so you wouldn't have people telling you, "You should have been here yesterday, they were really biting." All the fancy equipment that tells you when fish are in the area and at what depth they are in the water can't make the fish bite. They will only bite when they are ready. Remember these fish are not in a tank of water where they have limited access to food.

Even with all the things that could be going on, the fish might just be biting today. Don't stay home just because all the reports and weather conditions point to a fishless day. Remember, the fish can't read, they don't have phones or radios, and their TVs get poor reception under water. They only have cameras hanging down in the water from the fishing boat overhead. So get out and give fishing a try. You may find you really enjoy the sport.

Spring! Time to Think about Fishing
By Grandpa Fish Catcher
Thursday, Jul 09, 2009 08:49
As the weather begins to get warmer and the days become longer a person who fishes comes down with a fever. It is a spring fever that comes to those who love the outdoors and the call that challenges the hearts of every person that enjoys fishing. There is a sort of 'call of the wild' that excites the heart and gets the adrenalin flowing. Thoughts of catching fish are set in each person's mind as they plan their fishing adventures. Each person has their own species of fish they prefer best and most plans are set on that particular type of fish. Many fish you can fish for year round and when the ice is gone off the lakes and rivers in the spring they are open to fish. Some types of fish have set seasons and need to be checked out in the fishing law pamphlets of the state or area you are fishing in. Always make sure you know the laws before you fish, it could save you money and embarrassment. One type of fish sought after in the spring is the crappie (crop-ee), which are fun to catch and to eat. When you fish, always check the fish laws as to the limit of how many of each fish you can keep each day. Different varieties of fish have different limits of fish you can keep each day which is why it is important to know your laws.

It is important to know the fishing regulations on the lake or river you will be fishing on as there are different regulations for different bodies of water. The regulations for trout lakes and streams are different than for lakes and streams that have no trout. Fishing laws will tell you where you can fish and when you can fish for each species. As we prepare for another spring, summer, and fall of fishing let us use common sense and courtesy toward others. Our lakes and rivers are here for us to enjoy, they don't belong to any one person. Everyone should operate their boats according to boating laws and respect for others. We have a great and blessed country. Let us all enjoy it together and show our children and grandchildren how to fish and share the woods and waters of our great country. There is nothing greater than knowing how blessed we are in this great country of ours. God Bless America.
