Whether you're using a powered or non-powered vessel, boating can get you away from the shore and out to more fish.

Boating Check List

When going fishing in a boat, along with bait and poles, there are other things that need to be taken care of before going out on the lake to fish. Make sure the boat and motor are ready. Make sure the motor is properly tuned up and running well so you do not get caught in the middle of the water with a broken down motor. Always carry oars in the boat just in case you do have motor issues. Along with the boat, check the boat trailer. Make sure tires are inflated and a spare tire is checked and ready to go with you. Besides the trailer, it is necessary to check the safety of the trailer hitch on the vehicle making sure the proper size ball is on the hitch. Once the trailer is placed on the hitch, make sure the tail lights of both trailer and vehicle are working. If you are planning on fishing in the evening or at night, make sure there are proper lights on the front and rear of your boat as well, so you can safely return to the docking area after dark.

When it comes to life jackets, never leave shore without them. There has to be a life jacket for each person in the boat before launching out on the water. Also, make sure that you have life jacket sizes appropriate for each person who is in the boat. Floatation seats can help save a person when thrown overboard, but life jackets are a better assurance of their safety. Having life jackets in the boat is NOT enough, don't just carry the life jackets, wear them.
